Kuta Beach, Bali (Sunday April 5th, 2009) - Agus Frimanto won the Rusty Gromfest Halfway surfing competition today, surpassing fellow Lembongan prodigy Putra Hermawan in the overall rankings, resulting in a dramatic conclusion to the three-stage Rusty Gromfest Series Bali, 2009.
The series launched at Keramas in February, followed by an event at Pererenan in March, then culminated at 'Halfway' Kuta Beach today in challenging conditions.
Competitors were split into two age divisions - under 14 and under 16 - with Rusty's team of pro surfers taking on scoring duties under the watchful eye of ISC head judges. Over eighty grommets participated in each event.
The contests were free to enter with complimentary lunch and goody bags for everyone. Fun games and product giveaways were held throughout the day to engage the hordes of spectators and beach-goers.
Over the duration of the series the stand out surfers in the under 14 division have been Jeren (Canggu), Koko (Nusa Dua), Mansyur (Sumbawa), Blacky (Legian), and Ediana (Lembongan).The future of Indonesian surfing is in good hands with this lot, who all come from diverse backgrounds but have one thing in common: they absolutely rip!Today Jeren was in his element, winning each of his heats, and then claiming his maiden victory after going mental in the final. Ediana lost in the semis but still clenched the overall series title after finishing runner-up at Keramas and winning Pererenan.
In the under 16 division much of the attention has been focused on the Lembongan duo of Putra Hermawan and Agus Frimanto who have had consistent finals berths.
Putra had built a commanding ratings lead following two consecutive victories in the first two events (Agus placed 2nd and 3rd) but the additional 25% points up for grabs at Halfway meant that Agus was mathematically still in the running to take the overall title.
Today Putra and Agus met in the semi finals where Agus took it to the next level with a spectacular display of confident, critical surfing. He stomped a 360 air-reverse to take the heat and advance into the final alongside Ahmad Kamal while Putra fell victim to the flat, unresponsive ocean.
This left the door wide open for Agus, who would need to finish second or better to take the series title. With so much at stake, Agus Frimanto put all the pressure aside and destroyed every wave he caught in the final, winning convincingly.
He has been awarded a chance to compete against the best international junior surfers at the 14th annual Rusty Gromfest held at Lennox Head, Australia in July 2009."I'm so happy to win the event and get the ticket to Australia" beamed Agus after the podium celebration. The weather was really friendly at Volcom Stone’s Grillfish Surf Series that was held last Sunday on April 12th, as the clouds forming a nice barrier to the blasting Bukit sun. And the waves also couldn’t be more perfect - 2-3 feet high and just would not stop barraging.The most interesting to watch on the Under 14s category was little Tommy Sabri, who lead from the first heat with his snap and floater maneuvers. Too bad he didn’t get any waves at the finals, leaving I Kadek Koko Mitsua Antara as the winner.From early on it was a tight competition at the Under 17s finals between Agus Sumerta Yasa and Agus Sudiantara. But Agus Sumerta Yasa begun to be able to control the waves, and won the final heat with a significant point difference thanks to his smooth cutback and snap maneuvers.It was also intense at the Pro-Am division. I Kadek Arya Wiarta actually lead the score board and was about to snag the first place, but at the last minutes Mega Semadhi dropped a seriously big air and landed clean and perfect. This earned him high points and took him to victory.The prize presentation was held after the contestants enjoyed their free lunch and Volcom’s signature giveaway frenzy marked the end of the day.

Rusty Gromfest Series Bali 2008 - Halfway- 4/28/2008
Langit biru, dan ombak setinggi 4 kaki menyapa para grommet di Halfway Beach yang merupakan perhentian ketiga dan terakhir dari Rusty Gromfest Series 2008. Lebih dari 120 anak dari daerah Bali dan sekitarnya datang untuk menikmati hari yang menyenangkan di pantai, memenangkan banyak hadiah dan melatih kemampuan berkompetisi mereka. Di divisi Under 16 beberapa surfer seperti Gazali Hamzah, Agus Firmanto serta Alex Swadling (surfer asal Australia), terlihat begitu menonjol. Penyelenggara memilih untuk melangsungkan semua babak Under 16 sampai ke babak final dikarenakan kondisi laut saat itu yang terlihat sangat mendukung.Pada pertengahan hari, saat Under 14 dan Under 12 memasuki air, ombak semakin meninggi. Para surfer membelah ombak dengan begitu kerennya, mempertunjukan bakat mereka. Ediana Putra, Luke Hynd dan Koko Mitsua Antara membuat para juri terkesan dengan kombinasi floaters dan fin busts mereka.Pada babak final Under 12, Koko Mitsua Antara, Kadek Yoga, Luke Hynd, dan Komang Arip blew up, namun akhirnya Koko-lah yang memenangkan divisi Under 12 ini.Babak final divisi Under 14 dipimpin oleh Ediana Putra yang berhadapan dengan Ornot, Arya Wijaya dan Abi Azwar Anas. Walaupun Ornot asal Sumbawa tampil begitu memukau, namun Ediana lah yang memenangkan keseluruhan kompetisi, karena sebelumnya telah memenangkan peringkat ke-2 di Keramas, peringkat pke-1 di Canggu, dan kali ini peringkat ke-2 berhasil ia raih. Sungguh menakjubkan, Ediana yang baru berusia 12 tahun ini berselancar di dua divisi.Final Under 16 merupakan pertarungan antara Gazali Hamzah, Agus Firmanto, Alex Swadling, dan Darmaputra Tonjo. Pada akhirnya, Alex-lah yang memenangkan divisi Under 16 dan dinobatkan sebagai Rusty Gromfest Halfway Champ!

Tulen Surfers & Peran sertanya

Minggu 24 Mei 2009, bertempat di Pantai Kuta. MSC atau MagicWave Surfing Championship digelar pertama kalinya di tahun 2009 dengan memperebutkan Piala Lurah Kuta dan juga sekaligus memperingati Kim Bradley, salah seorang legend surfer yang punya peran besar terhadap perkembangan surfing di Bali. Pada kesempatan ini banyak anak-anak Tulen Surfers yang ikut meramaikan ajang perdana dari MSC ini. Adapun nama yang tampil meramaikan adalah sebagai berikut Koko Mitsua, Kadek Andi, Mang Dul, Komang Sadan, Bulux, Made Jung, Wiswa Krishna dan surfer termuda Agus Miota.

Acara yang dimulai sejak pukul 8.30 pagi ini langsung dibuka oleh penyisihan untuk kelompok under 10 (dibawah usia 10 tahun), disusul penyisihan kelompok under 14 (dibawah usia 14 tahun) dan yang terakhir penyisihan under 10 pushing (Untuk usia dibawah 10 tahun yang papannya masih diperbolehkan didorong oleh orang tuanya).

Pukul 12.30 semua penyisihan selesai, dilanjutakan lifeguard contest dan surf school gratis yang diperuntukan untuk para pengunjung pantai Kuta atau siapapun yang ingin belajar. Sedangkan diareal parkir, Minerva melakukan test drive untuk motor mereka, para pengunjung pun boleh mencoba motor produk mereka.

Setelah istirahat makan siang kontes dilanjutkan ke babak berikutnya, sayangnya air sudah mulai surut. Tapi tidak mengurangi antusiasme peserta dan penonton. Tepat pukul 16.30 kontes sudah selesai, dan dilanjutkan dengan tabur bunga bersama (panitia, peserta dan beberapa pengunjung) untuk menghormati Alm. Kim Bradley.

Setelah itu acara ditutup dengan pengumuman pemenang oleh MC, dan penyerahan piala oleh Lurah Kuta. "Viva Surfing Indonesia"
